Highstrung Arabian, how to calm her before riding?
I agree with alot of the nswers you have been given, I have had my arab since she was a yearling and she is six and half now. I guess arabs are like what you hear about the bully breeds of dogs you either love them or hate them( I love them i guess thats where I have a american bulldog and a arab) LOL But yes they are very spirited(Thats is what I love) and YOU CAN NOT be forcefull with a arab, like one stated about the chain on her halter, she is right, My x vet used a chain and twitch on my mare years ago, and she went nuts, it wil cause more fighting and problems and you will not win and will make her temperment worse! I won't have anyone who vets or trims use a twitch or chain on my mare, I guess that is why I am so picky on who handles her. Arabs get flighty on new situations liek on trails, and will pick up on your cues.IF you are jittery you can guarentee your arab will pick it up"oh my gosh my rider is nervous, that must mean something is gonna eat me i am gonna panick" you have always got to remain in control of the situations, but never ever use force with your arab, when my mare acts flighty at times I laugh cuz it's her breed, but she knows she will not walk all over me. Lounging is very helpfull in calming your mare before a high stressed situation for her. and lots and lots of ground trainning, work with backing, whaoaing, walking on ,trotting , and whoaing all on lead on the ground and gain her respect. Lounging her before riding and stressfull situations help gets her focused. I would be more than happy to show you if you were in my area, but look on clint anderson and you tube sites and it can give ya a idea.I always use voice commands for my mare, clucking to move up to trot, kissing to move up to canter, and when i want her to stop on the lounge I do a rolling with my tongue noise almost like a drum roll, and she stops immediatly and turns and looks at me for further insruction. Try it. I havent used any of the calm and cool stuff, so I dont know what to tell ya about that one. But also on her first couple rides take a well mannered horse buddy with her and let them ride in front of you, having a calm horse in front of her and her noticing that he is calm may help to calm her. Good luck, arabs can be difficult, but treat them good and teach them in a humane way they can be one of the most loyal and fun breeds you have ever owned.
