Why does the USA have only 2 major Political partys and not three like most European countrys?

other countrys have Conservatives, Liberals and socialsits but we have only Conservatives and Liberals why is this? is this because we are too advanced to fall into socialism and if this is the case does it prove that Socialism is a barrier to a country achieving greatness?
