What are some expensive foods like other than caviar and sushi?
white truffles, foie gras, kobe beef, as mentioned previously, but in addition, vanilla bean, saffron threads. The sole reason these foods are expensive...are because to obtain them in quantity, they require intensive labor. It takes about 14,000 crocus flowers to create one ounce of saffron. The threads are the pistils from the flowers, and have to plucked by hand. Vanilla orchids have to be germinated by hand in order to produce the bean pods. Truffles grow on the roots of trees, and are hidden under the soil, and have to be sniffed out by specially trained dogs and/or pigs. Kobe beef are carefully raised cattle, of a certain breed, and fed a strict diet. Foie gras is an enlarged goose liver, created by force feeding the goose(Many view the practice as inhumane). Sushi, varies in price...not all of it is expensive. The most expensive sushi places, you're paying for the quality and freshness of the fish, and well as the knowledge and skill of the chef. On occasion, the rarity of the fish. Caviar, some varieties of caviar, can only be harvested in very cold, deep waters, and can take expensive diving equipment to retrieve it, provided you can locate it.
